Your own drug use

If you want to have open conversations with your children about drugs, it’s best to be honest about your own drug use.
Yes, we’re talking about coffee, alcohol, tobacco and anything else we use, and possibly depend upon.

We’re as vulnerable and gullible as the young, as stressed as the young , and as vain and self-conscious as the young, and drugs of one sort or another often play their part in the way we manage our lives.
Let’s be honest about it because the young soon spot when their elders try to pretend they’re their betters.

So how does this help?

If we can:
  • be honest about it
  • show that we understand its effects - positive and negative
  • show our children that we try to manage it
  • talk to them about our own drug use
  • ask them for their views

then we’re more likely to have open and honest conversations about drugs with them.
